Author Q & A
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this story?I wrote this story at a writers retreat in Scotland a couple of years ago. It was quite a forlorn, windswept sort of a place, without any internet or television. I think being isolated fed into wanting to write about a lonely mythological character, and to consider how he might relate to the modern world.
When did you start writing?
When I was fifteen probably. But I started writing seriously in my early twenties.
Do you have a favourite genre?
I particularly like literary fiction.
What’s your favourite book or short story?
The Vet’s Daughter. A most extraordinary and dreamy slice of gothic fiction. I read it over a year ago but it continues to haunt me.
What has been your biggest challenge as a writer?
Balancing writing what I want to write against what people will (or might) want to read.
Are you currently working on a full-length novel and looking for a publisher?Yes. In fact my agent is currently trying to place my new novel, Life After Enid Blyton. It’s contemporary fiction, about a thirty year old gay man in London who can’t get over being dropped by his boyfriend: meanwhile the rest of the world is busy preparing for the worst because there’s an Asteroid called Enid Blyton on its way to devastate Europe. Please get in touch if you’d like to see it!
What do you most enjoy about writing?
Being able to delve into that inner world, and put down all the things on page that you aren’t really allowed put out there in regular conversation – at least not if you don’t want people to think you’re crazy.
Amazon: Friend or foe?
Well it’s not going anywhere so let’s try to be friends.
